Position sizing is risk management, not prediction

You don’t need to know whether a trade will win to size it correctly — you just need a stop-loss and a rule for how much of the account any single loss is allowed to cost. This calculator turns that rule into a concrete position size.

The one formula behind every risk-based position size

Risk amount (account size × risk %) divided by the distance between your entry and your stop-loss gives the quantity of the asset to buy. A wider stop-loss means a smaller position for the same dollar risk; a tighter stop-loss allows a larger one.

How this tool works

Four inputs, one division — computed live in your browser as you type, nothing sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

position size = (account size × risk %) ÷ |entry price − stop-loss price|. That gives the quantity of the asset where, if the stop-loss is hit, the loss equals exactly account size × risk %.

A fixed % scales automatically as the account grows or shrinks, and keeps every trade's downside comparable regardless of how far away the stop-loss is — a tight stop lets you size up, a wide stop sizes you down, for the same dollar risk.

Most risk-management guidance for active trading sits around 0.5–2% of the account per trade — small enough that a losing streak doesn't do lasting damage. This tool doesn't recommend a number; it just does the arithmetic for whatever you choose.

No — it's the pure risk-sizing formula. On a large position or a thin market, actual slippage on the stop-loss fill can widen your real loss beyond the theoretical one calculated here.
